(Last week we talked about CPS Energy’s air duct replacement rebate, which means you can get money back for saving energy. We wanted to get some more information for you straight from the source – so I had a quick talk with Albert Cantu from CPS Energy.)
Ben Hubbert: What are CPS Energy’s views on air duct replacement?
Albert Cantu: Ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout a home with forced-air heating and air conditioning systems. A duct system is the collection of tubes that distribute this air to each of the home’s rooms. It can make a big difference in both the cost and the effectiveness of heating and cooling your home. It also has an important effect on the comfort and health of your home’s occupants.
About 20 percent of the air that moves through your home’s duct system may be lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. The likely result is higher utility bills and more difficulty keeping your house comfortable, no matter how the thermostat is set.
The performance of your air flow system may be compromised and in need of repair or replacement if:
– You have high summer and winter energy bills
– You have rooms that are difficult to heat and cool
– Your ducts are located in an attic, crawlspace or the garage
– Or you find tangled or kinked flexible ducts in your system
So as you can see the importance of repairing or replacing your air ducts can mean the difference between “keeping or losing” your money, not to mention sacrificing your comfort level.
BH: Why did CPS Energy feel the need to offer this incentive for customers to have it done?
AC: A full range of energy efficiency and demand reduction programs has been developed to cover all customer categories. These program offerings are evaluated annually and modifications and/or additions are made to target the most effective current methods of energy reduction, such as repair or replacement of duct systems.
Also, CPS Energy has committed to an aggressive, long-term energy efficiency and conservation plan, referred to as “Saving for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP). Through programs and initiatives, such as this rebate, it helps CPS Energy achieve its annual electrical demand reduction targets.
BH: Explain the process customers will go through if they take advantage of the rebate.
AC: The duct repair or replacement rebate is 25 percent, up to $1,500 per system and $2,500 per customer. Air Flow Performance Rebates are available only for work completed on existing AC systems. This program is not applicable to new construction. The Air Flow Performance Certification program will include rebates for the repair and/or replacement of duct work needed to improve the overall efficiency of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system and for testing that shows improvement to the HVAC system.
Rebates are not available for duct sealing.
Steps required to qualify for the rebate:
1) Pretesting must show 25% or more leakage in the duct system.
2) Post-testing of the repairs and/or replacement must show 8% or less leakage in the duct system.
3) All testing must be performed by a CPS Energy registered contractor under the Air Flow Performance Rebate Program. (A list of all approved contractors can be found on our website.)
4) Applications must be received within 30 days of completion of projects.
Copies of the application are only available through Air Flow Performance Registered Contractors.
BH: When does the rebate offer expire?
AC: CPS Energy will continue to offer this rebate through Dec. 31st 2011 or until all funds have exhausted.
BH: Who can people contact if they have any questions?
AC: To learn more about the Air Flow Performance Rebate, log onto our website or call 353-2SAV.
(Thanks to Albert and, as always, let me know if you have any questions!)
