For the most part, HVAC systems become another sound in the background of our everyday lives. That is until something goes wrong, and your noisy system makes you dread hearing your air conditioner kick on. Although it is common for air conditioners to make some noise while running, you’ll know something has gone awry if you repeatedly hear an unusual sound. The first steps to mitigating the noise coming from your unit are figuring out the type of sound it’s making and locating the source.
Since an air conditioner has many parts, finding the source of the noise can be challenging when the same type of noise can mean a few different things. A slight hum with a squealing noise can indicate that your system is in need of lubrication. Have an AC technician check and oil your belts, fans and bearings to solve this problem. A humming sound can also mean your outdoor unit has bent coil fins and isn’t ventilating properly – another problem you’ll want a technician to examine.
Rattling and clanking sounds are common noises AC units make when something isn’t right on the inside. While running, the vibration of an HVAC unit can cause parts to loosen or become completely loose. If your rattling noise is coming from a loose screw, simply tighten them with a screwdriver. While inside your unit, check to make sure your fan and blades haven’t loosened, as well. Bent fan blades can also cause unwanted noise by hitting other parts of your unit or scraping the walls. Unbend your fan blades, and clean them of dust and debris to dull the noise.
A whistling or hissing sound coming from your unit typically originates in your air duct system. First step here is to get your ducts cleaned of dust and other things that could restrict air flow and cause a whistling noise. If your air ducts are clean and you still hear a hissing sound, air might be escaping through holes in your ducts and you’ll need professional maintenance.
If the noise coming from your unit is unbearable and you’re unable to find the source or a solution, turn your system completely off and call your AC company.
