Being an air conditioning company, we get calls all the times from people whose AC units aren’t cooling properly. There can be several different answers to that type of question.
The number one problem we come across is a lack of air return. That is the grill you see near your AC blower. The easiest thing to do is to make sure your furniture isn’t blocking the grill. If that’s not the case and you’re still having problems, paying to increase your return grill typically pays for itself within the first year of installation.
One of the other main reasons for an air conditioning unit that’s not cooling properly is up in your attic – it’s the ductwork.
There are several things that can go wrong with your air duct system. There can be leaks in the ducts, which mean your AC is cooling your attic, not your house. Your ducts can also have kinks, which restrict the airflow. They may also be improperly installed, which is a very common problem.
So what can you do if your home has warm spots or just isn’t cooling properly? Check to see if your ducts look more like the second picture above than the first. Also check to see if your attic is insulated. If they’re not, give us a call and we can do a ductwork evaluation.
Getting your ductwork in order will not only help keep your home cool in this intense heat, it will also improve the lifespan and efficiency of your AC unit.
