Whether you are a new Texan or have lived here your entire life, you never quite get used to the summer heat. If we are not out on the water, we are escaping to the air conditioning like people up north escape the snow during the winter. For this reason alone, the energy bill in the summer is always the highest. For many homeowners, it becomes an internal battle of staying cool or saving money. Fortunately, we have a few tips and tricks to help you cool your home this summer without cranking up the air conditioner.
Shut the blinds
This tip is likely a no-brainer for most people, but it is one of the best tips to keeping your home cool during the summer months. Now, we aren’t saying you have to live in a dungeon all summer long. But, at the hottest points in the day when the sun is glaring directly into the house, a closed curtain or blind will prevent the internal temperature from rising and you from touching the thermostat.
Make sure ceiling fans rotate counter-clockwise
This is a fun tip that most people don’t know about. By setting your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise, it pushes air straight down and keeps you feeling cooler.
Stay unplugged…
… if you aren’t home or using the appliance. It isn’t uncommon for gaming consoles, older televisions and computers to overheat. The additional heat produced by the appliances only makes a room hotter and raises the energy bill. Make sure you are staying unplugged, as much as possible, this summer.
