When your air conditioner starts making unusual noises, it can ruin your day. However, a rattling noise can mean a variety of things for an AC system, ranging from simple fixes to major repairs. Here are a few reasons your AC might be making rattling noises.
Debris
The first thing you should check for if you hear rattling is debris in the system. Check the outdoor unit for rocks, sticks, leaves or any other debris. You can easily prevent debris from causing issues with your AC in the future by doing the following:
- Clear the space around and over the outdoor unit
- Regularly schedule AC maintenance
Loose Panels
Another cause of rattling you should check for is loose panels. Improper installation or regular use can cause screws and bolts on your AC unit to loosen, which will make a rattling noise when the system is on.
To fix this, try checking for visibly loose screws and bolts on the unit, tightening any that you find. You may be able to locate the loose bolts by following the noise, but you may have a different problem if the rattling persists after tightening all of the bolts.
The Motor is Damaged
Unfortunately, not all causes of rattling are an easy fix. If you have a damaged motor in your AC system, parts may become loose and begin rattling. AC repair is the only way to fix this issue, so contact your AC company right away.
A Misaligned Fan
A fan in your AC may also be the source of rattling – due to misalignment. Debris or faulty installation can cause the blades of a fan to move out of alignment and knock against other parts of the unit. If this is the case, you should immediately contact an AC repair company to avoid the fan causing more problems.
