It’s been an incredibly mild winter so far in San Antonio. We’ve even had some days recently hit the 80s. So it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’re out of the woods when it comes to the cold weather. But forecasts are still calling for winter to make its presence felt here in the coming weeks.
Here are a few free or low-cast winter energy tips to keep your San Antonio heating system running efficiently, courtesy of Energy Star.
Use the sun to your advantage – During the day, keep the curtains open on any windows facing the south. That way sunlight should naturally raise the temperature in your home. Close the curtains at night, however.
Lower the temperature – CPS Energy recommends keeping your thermostat between 68-70 degrees when you’re home during the cold spells. Remember to lower the thermostat a few degrees if you’re leaving for a while. According to Energy Star, every degree you drop on the thermostat is a three-percent savings on your heating bill. A programmable thermostat can be a huge help, as long as it’s programmed properly.
Make sure your HVAC system is properly maintained – It’s not too late to get a winter tune-up. This regularly maintenance keeps your heating system operating efficiently and effectively. Maintenance also includes regularly changing out your air filter.
